The Main Band
Somersham Town Band is a traditional brass band based in Somersham, a village 5 miles North of St Ives in Cambridgeshire. We are keen and enthusiastic amateurs who give our time freely for the joy of making music together in a relaxed and friendly environment . We play a wide variety of music from across the genres and give around 20 performances a year at local venues. The Band holds rehearsals twice a week. On Thursday evenings we hold our full practice from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the Somersham British Legion Hall and some members meet on Sunday mornings from 10.30am to 12.15pm in the Somersham Victory Hall.
The Training Band
In addition to the main band, Somersham Town Band also has a training band. This band provides both young persons and adults the opportunity to learn to play a brass musical instrument. In due course trainees will progress into the main band. Young persons can grow in confidence and develop lifelong skills within a fun and safe brass band setting. The Band has been working closely with Brass Band England to develop appropriate Safeguarding procedures. This ensures the safety of young and vulnerable people placed in our care. New beginners will generally start with other beginners and will initially be taught in a group together. This allows them to learn the first basics of how to hold their instruments, how to produce notes and how to read the first elements of music. They will begin to join in with the training band usually quite quickly, after just a few lessons. They will then begin to put into practice the new skills they have begun to learn.
The Band has a range of instruments available to loan at no cost to members. The instrument is absolutely free to use whilst the member plays for the Band. The only loan condition is that the instrument is looked after carefully. We also require the band member and their family to make a solid commitment to the member attending rehearsals and engagements regularly. The training band rehearses once a week on Thursday evenings from 6pm to 7.15pm in the Somersham British Legion Hall.
